The Indigo Girls are coming to Athens this March 21st for a concert featuring the OHIO symphony orchestra, set to play at 730pm at Templeton-Blackburn Memorial Auditorium.
There’s something about the Indigo Girls. On the scene since the late ‘80s, they’ve racked up quite an impressive lists of record sales and music awards. NPR would argue they’re one of the best fold duos on time, but they’re a lot more than that, too.
Indigo Girls have long given music and lyric to the unique experience that is being from Appalachia. They sing of coal mines and mountaintop removal, of the resilience and heartbreak that define the region's history. But they also celebrate the rich tapestry of Appalachian storytelling and music.
At the same time, the Indigo Girls have never shied away from their LGBTQIA+ identity. In a time when LGBTQIA+ representation in mainstream music was scarce, they became pioneers, using their lyrics and performances to normalize queer relationships and challenge societal norms. Songs like "Closer to Fine" and "Romeo and Juliet" resonated deeply with LGBTQIA+ listeners, offering them a sense of belonging and visibility.
And then, of course, there will be our uber-talented friends from the OHIO Symphony Orchestra adding even more detail and dimension to the Indigo Girls’ already beautiful music. Not a show to be missed, for sure. They’re only gonna be here for one night – get your tickets ahead of time!
